The Untamed Aubrac Plateau

For days, we had heard about the untamed wild Aubrac plateau. The warning stories of fierce wind and rain howling through the rugged terrain caught our attention. We knew people who delayed their walks because they had heard of inclement weather and did not want to be in that area during that time. Our friend Stephanie decided to take the day off because of this concern.

Recalling our first Camino, we faced a similar choice regarding the Pyrenees. Many opted to circumvent the mountains, but we were drawn to the adventure of crossing them, just as people had done for centuries before us. With caution in mind, we eagerly embraced the challenge and anticipated the untamed beauty that lay ahead with a sense of excitement.

Despite the initial wind, cold, and rain, as we ventured into this area, a sense of fearlessness began to stir within me. It had been a while since I had felt this way, and it was invigorating. The countryside was breathtaking. The clouds a sight to behold. The most beautiful part were the changes taking place within me. I was beginning to see the gift God would have for me in this time away.

We stayed in a renowned gite, Gite du Barry, which people would book far in advance just for the meal. Here, we would try one of the area’s specialties: Aligot. Now, Aligot has everything I love in one place. It is a mashed potato dish with equal parts potatoes and fresh cheese. A little butter and garlic are added for good measure. Not only is it wonderful to eat, it is beautiful to watch them cook and serve it! With their warm hospitality, our hosts made the experience even more delightful.

That night, after dinner, a young boy who reminded me of my grandson Gabe began to play his guitar. Despite being a French speaker, he sang in English and it was lovely. Soon, the entire Gite was singing along, and when he sang my favorite songs, I knew we had been given a special gift that night.

My inward peace and endurance grew as we settled into a comfortable and familiar routine. As each day passed, I felt more confident in our ability to walk this path. With its untamed beauty, the wild Aubrac brought me a profound sense of joy and contentment. This journey was awakening parts of me that had felt dormant for so long.

Thinking of you. You are loved.
