Chrysalis

Chrysalis: noun \`kri-se-les\ : 1. A pupa of a butterfly.  2. A protective covering, a sheltered state of being or growth.  Merriam Webster.

chrysalis-140878_1920For the last decade we have taken a sabbatical in the fall. This is really a yearlong process for us as we plan and consider our options for travel, schedule time off from our commitments, and do all the necessary preparations to be away.  We read and research the areas we wish to visit hoping to understand the history and culture of the area before we arrive. We learn so much and grow in so many ways. The more astute have asked us if these really are sabbaticals since we are not officially studying anything to further our careers. Our reply, we are studying and learning about ourselves and life. Each and every time we travel in this way I savor these sheltered states of being and growth.

It would almost seem as if a sheltered state and a state of growth are two different things. But, I think that growth cannot happen without those moments of intentional sheltered and protected moments. In a sense, it is a bid for independence not only from others but from ourselves as well and our mistaken ideas and definitions of self. It is easy to get lost in “I am this…” or “I do that…”while losing the wonderfully made  parts of who we are.  We give up the freedom to just be while trying to meet the expectations of so many internal and external forces.

butterfly-461794_1920Traveling the way we do helps me immensely in surrendering to a power that is Greater than I am. Not all things are mine to fix or to control. They are not supposed to be. I am constantly reminded of the One who knows the Way each and everyday of my life. He who shelters and protects me and knows exactly where I am supposed to be. I am a piece of work in His hand and he is not done with me yet. I am wonderfully  made even when I don’t believe it myself. I am remembering to trust Him in all matters. Therein lies my truest shelter, most significant  growth and ultimate freedom.

Buen Camino. You are loved…

  1. Well, I feel like I just got a Blessing at church! All so beautifully stated! That’s the well I felt in Am. Samoa last August. They thought they were learning from us, but we internalized so much from those we met!

I love Norfolk! Hoping the weather is not too wet for you! My kids lived in Old Chesapeake for a few years-wonderful area and people!

Our weather is much more fall-like today-leaves wafting down ever more! We’ll try to rake up as many as we can before you come home. Haha! Love to you both and all you meet!
