Two More Places Off the Bucket List!

We usually take a spring trip to explore more of the United States, discovering new corners a little closer to home. But this year, we decided to do something different. We began with a familiar favorite—San Francisco. We took the train into the city, enjoying the journey as much as the destination, and spent our time walking the streets and revisiting some of our favorite old haunts. There’s something special about returning to places that hold memories, and San Francisco welcomed us back with its usual charm—familiar, vibrant, and full of life.

But this trip wasn’t just about revisiting the past. We decided to do something different—something we had been talking about for years. Australia and New Zealand had long held a spot on our bucket list, and we finally made the decision to go. Looking back now, we couldn’t be happier that we made this choice. It was unlike any of our last trips and a very exciting place to be.

Our journey to Australia and New Zealand began the moment we touched down in Sydney, a city that instantly hums with energy and possibility. After the long flight, stepping out into the warm air felt like entering a different rhythm of life—one where harbor views, historic streets, and vibrant culture blend effortlessly.

We made our way to The Rocks, Sydney’s oldest neighborhood, where cobblestone lanes wind between sandstone buildings that seem to whisper stories from another time. Cafés spill out onto the streets, local markets buzz with creativity, and every corner feels like a perfect introduction to the city’s character—both laid-back and alive. The waterfront views were spectacular.

One of the most unforgettable moments was walking across the Sydney Harbour Bridge. With each step, the view expanded—boats cutting across the sparkling water, the skyline rising in the distance, and the iconic Opera House gleaming below. It’s the kind of walk that makes you slow down, not because it’s difficult, but because you don’t want to miss a single second of it.

That evening, we experienced something truly special: Madama Butterfly at the Sydney Opera House. Sitting inside such a world-famous venue, watching the performance unfold with the harbor just beyond the windows, felt almost surreal. The music, the setting, the atmosphere—it all came together in a way that made the night unforgettable.

And when the final curtain fell, the city was just getting started. Sydney’s nightlife welcomed us with open arms—lively bars, waterfront views, and a buzz that carried well into the night. It was the perfect way to end our first chapter in this incredible part of the world.

This was only the beginning, but already Australia had set the tone for a journey filled with beauty, culture, and moments we’d carry with us long after we returned home.

From Australia, our journey carried us across the Tasman Sea to New Zealand—a place that feels almost otherworldly in its natural beauty. If Sydney was vibrant and electric, New Zealand was grounding, vast, and quietly breathtaking.

One of the most unforgettable stops was Milford Sound. Towering fjords rose dramatically from dark, glassy waters, their peaks often wrapped in mist that seemed to drift in and out like a living thing. Waterfalls cascaded down sheer cliffs, and the stillness of the place made every sound—every ripple, every distant bird call—feel amplified. It wasn’t just a view; it was an experience that settled deep in your bones.

As we continued, each destination revealed a different side of the country. Dunedin charmed us with its Scottish heritage and striking coastal landscapes, while Christchurch showed resilience and renewal, blending modern creativity with its historic roots. In Wellington, the capital, we found a lively arts scene, incredible food, and a harbor that seemed to wrap the city in calm. Some days we were just to view the beauty that is natural to this small country and to listen to the stories told to us by the local people. It was one of my most favorite parts of this trip.

In Picton, adventure called. We rode airboats up winding rivers, speeding through clear water and untouched wilderness—a moment where adrenaline and peace coexisted.

Then came Napier, where the pace slowed, and the sun lingered just a little longer. We explored the region by e-bike, riding through rolling vineyards and stopping at wineries along the way. Each stop offered something new—their reds and crisp whites wines, and warm conversations with people who clearly loved what they did. It was the kind of day you wish you could stretch out forever.

Our journey through Marlborough carried that same sense of ease, with endless vines stretching toward the horizon and a quiet elegance in the landscape. And as we made our way north to Tauranga and finally the Bay of Islands, the scenery shifted once again—golden beaches, turquoise waters, and a sense of openness that felt like the perfect conclusion to our travels.

New Zealand didn’t just impress—it will forever be with us. Each place felt intentional, reminding us to slow down and be present. It was the perfect companion to our Australian adventure and a chapter we’ll never forget.

We are home now. Forever grateful for our time away on this unforgettable journey and forever grateful to be home.

You are loved and you were missed.
