Betanzos

Dear friends of ours, Mark and Susan Wilson, had walked this Camino recently and had told us to be sure and try the Spanish tortilla from Betanzos. These we had heard were the specialty of this town and had something that the others did not have: a runny yoke. The first time we had a tortilla in Spain, we expected a taco or burrito. To our surprise, it was an egg and potato dish that would fuel us for a long day’s walk. They can be served both hot or cold and are great anytime of the day.

It was about a sixteen-mile walk, and by the time we checked in and had a shower, we missed the window for lunch. We would have to wait until dinner, which was no earlier than 8:00. We had a glass of wine, and we were given a small bowl of soup as a tapa and told we would have to wait until dinner to try this dish.

It was worth the wait! The restaurant was happy that we had returned after telling us we had missed lunch. We ordered the omelet, a salad, and meatballs. We had enough food to last us three days. It was fantastic, and the tortilla was the best!

Noteworthy to this area is the Igrexa de San Francisco (St. Francis Church), erected in 1387. Also, there are several town palaces, a 16th-century clock tower, and several town walls that are approximately five hundred years old. We meandered the rest of the day.

We loved our time here, and we are happy that our paths have crossed with Betanzos.
