The Magic of Porto

It took a few days in Porto before I began to relax and catch my breath. The days of fun and exploration helped me relinquish all that had consumed me before I left home. It always feels overwhelming as I get ready to travel, and this time was no different. I was exhausted before I even began my pilgrimage. I know I was not alone with these feelings.

We stayed in a lovely apartment along the river in the area known as Cais da Riberia. We could walk from our front door and in no time be where the river comes alive with its cafes, bars, restaurants, and street entertainment. It felt comforting to sit down and order a glass of wine and a Portuguese snack and just enjoy the atmosphere and fresh air. The boats gliding up and down the river, families out together for a meal enjoying each other’s company, and the street musicians performing along the edge of the river helped ease my heart, and I began to relax.

We have decided to walk the central route of the Camino Portuguese with a small variant along the coast. We will head north to Vila do Conde, a twenty-mile stretch on the coastline, and then head eastward, catching the central route in Barcelos.

Porto is a magical city to me, and I am always excited when I am here. But I am ready to move on and experience what the Way will bring. I have prayed and yearned for these travels for over a year, and my heart is full for what is to be.

Bom Camhino!
