It is officially Spring, and another season of change is upon us. Cool, nippy mornings followed by sunny afternoons with a warmth that can penetrate my bones without burning my flesh. The fragrances and sounds that abound evoke memories of seasons that have passed and are now a reminder of how wonderful all my seasons have been. While Autumn reminds me to let go of what once was, Spring inspires me to embrace what is new. It is easy to think like this when the skies are blue, the air fresh, and new life abounds.

I find every opportunity to open the doors and windows of my home. I love working outside in my yard and will often turn on my favorite music. I can get lost in these moments, and the addition of music can transform and speak to me. For example, I found myself singing, Feeling Good with Nina Simone the other day. Even though this song had been a hit in the 1960s, I could remember all the words. Suddenly, it was as if those words were written for me and this season of life.

Fish in the sea, you know how I feel
River running free, you know how I feel
Dragonfly out in the sun, you know what I mean
Butterflies all havin’ fun, you know what I mean
Scent of pine, you know how I feel

Sleep in peace when the day is done
Oh, freedom is mine
It’s a new dawn
It’s a new day
It’s a new life for me
And, I’m feeling good
This is the year of my retirement.

I have finally begun to say this out loud. I know that this will bring many changes, most of them within me. A change of perception about myself and then a shift to pursue more of my someday lists. With so many things to sort through, I have decided to begin this process by doing something that I love and always makes my heart feel free; a walkabout. There is something about long-distance walking that gives my heart and soul perspective. It centers me, allows me to reevaluate my priorities, and gives me time to consider what lies ahead. I will need this during this season of change.

And, speaking of change, I will not be with my constant companion on this trip. We have been inseparable, and this will make for a very different journey but a memorable one nonetheless. So, instead, Crystal and Desiree will be at my side, maybe a few feet ahead of me, but where they lay their head, I will also lay mine.
So I look forward to what lies ahead.
Dragonfly, I know what you mean.
