On the Road Again

fullsizeoutput_4d47It has been a whirlwind since we began the process of travel for our fall sabbatical. It is possible that we are getting older and  while our preparations for travel have always taken a bit of work it now feels like there are moments in which these tasks are overwhelming. Finishing up work projects, getting the house ready for the change of seasons during the months we are gone, the follow-up medical appointments that clear us for travel, and the desire to see everyone just one more time before we go feels like a full time job! There is a thought that carries me through this  though. In the midsts of this busyness I will say to myself next week at this time I will be …someplace else. I am not always sure where that someplace will be but I know it will be without my to-do list. Suffice to say I do not have my list with me today and I  barely remember if  had anything left to do before we left. We have begun our sabbatical.

fullsizeoutput_4d42As we board the train to Suisun City I can feel my cares ease away. I love train travel and I find the movement and sound to be very soothing. We nest in to our seats and quietly watch the scenery as it quickly moves by. We see these towns  in a way we never see them while driving along the freeways. Some are hardly reconizable. I conjure up memories of places I have traveled by train before and these thoughts bring me great joy. Once we arrive in Travis AFB we begin the process of travel eastward. Here we relinquish our easy and predictable plans and rely on our ability to travel creatively. We are not hoping on a plane headed to Spain but are hoping on a plane heading east. There is quite a difference. We know that as long as this type of travel is exciting to us we will continue to do so.

For now we are in Travis awaiting a flight that is headed in our direction. A lovely flight has come and gone four times since we have arrived. There is a possibility for tomorrow and so we shall see. In the interim we will begin our sabbatical. This is one of our most favorite places in the fullsizeoutput_4d36world. It is the starting place of many of our adventures.  We will catch up on some much needed rest, walk along the base to our favorite haunts and revel in the moment we are in.

We are in the best of company…

  1. Good Morning! I have no idea what just awakened me, but immediate alertness to yet another “disaster” this week drove my hand to my phone; I just had to do a one-eyed check! Whew! Nothing!
Except…I had gone to sleep praying over your travel situation yesterday, that wait to travel east… and whose photo should pop up but yours! A Very Lovely One, I must say! So of course, I read on, and prayers started to be answered, it sounds like! Yea! Godspeed you two east on this “restful” sabbatical; I shall look forward to your awakenings often!
For now, just a bit more shuteye in preparation for Bulldog First Home Game Day craziness! Love to you both and Prayers for safe travels and comfy seats!
