This is the time in our travels when I take a moment to reflect upon the gifts of my time away. Somehow, in the altering of my daily routines I seem to see the world a little differently which helps me gain a perspective that I am usually in need of. I know I am a work in progress but these sabbaticals’ always seem to help rekindle something in me that is amiss.
As I write these words I let out a deep sigh and realize that it just feels good to breathe and I have once again become conscious of this simple act. It feels as if I have been in a constant state of inhalation this last year; as if I were always holding my breath waiting for what might happen next and forgetting the value of the exhalation and the balance that comes with this combination.
Meandering through the Black Forest region of Germany we were able to catch our breath and see the beauty of life in this area. We enjoyed living in the small villages as we became a part of each and every place we stayed. A cold beer, a braut on a roll lathered in mustard, and a piece of German pastry were transforming. We walked through the small villages excited to see the Camino signs along the way and we let our hearts stir with the hope that we would do this once again. We worked on our language skills and committed to study our language courses a little more diligently so the next time we were abroad we would do better. Mostly we took the time to talk and to be with each other and not operate off an appointment or a to-do list. I feel as if we have begun once again to resume the beautiful life.
I am the first to admit that I am blessed with an abundance in my life. I am surrounded by family and friends and in this season of life my workload is not as demanding. I found solace in the sanctuary of my home this last year. Leaving my nest and stepping out to travel has reawakened my heart to life again. I am grateful for that.
So I sit here as we are about to board a C-17 from Kentucky to Travis AFB and savor what has transpired these last several weeks. I am grateful for the beauty and ease of our travels. I am thankful for those we met along the way who have become a part of the tapestry that is our life. I am excited to return in the midst of fall and be home as the leaves change to their most vibrant colors. I will inhale the coolness of the air around and remember to exhale as well. I am looking forward to walking and preparing for my next walk-about. But mostly, I am looking forward to being with you.
You are loved…
Breathtaking ❤️
