Schonach im Schwarzwald and Other Beautiful Places

fullsizeoutput_3af3After spending some warm sunny  days in beautiful Waldkirch, we heard a week of snow and cold weather would soon be upon us. We are enamored with the beauty of this area and so we decided to stay a while longer. Why not nestle in somewhere and just enjoy the winter storm? We have always wanted to be snowed in somewhere and this was as good a place as any. We chose a cozy home in Schonach im Schwarzwald. Let me just say, this is the place dreams are made of.

IMG_4468Schonach sits within a mountain range in Schwarzwald-Baar in the district of Baden-Württemberg.  Throughout this mountain range there are a series of villages  that will literally take your breath away. We toured the area while the weather was still warm and stopped in St Peter where the monastery church built-in 1093 still stands.

St Marden is on the pilgrimage route, Wege der Jakobspilger–Jakobsweg, also known as The Way of St James. It made our hearts happy to walk a little on this Camino for a few moments and recall the many stories of our lives on these pilgrimages. It was refreshing to our souls and gave us hope for future walks.

We sat in a small cafe in Titisee-Neustadt near the lake and enjoyed a hot braut and a cold beer as the sun warmed our bones.  These small villages are exquisite and fairy tale like and each of them have something unique to offer to this area.

We went to bed one evening and woke up to a winter wonderland. We were in awe of the transformation and excited to be nestled in. We were able to get to town on occasion but found we did not need much more than we already had and we were happy to enjoy the tranquility that a snow storm brings. We were warm and content just to be where we were.

Amongst other things, it houses the highest waterfalls in all of Germany which has an overall drop of 163 meters  or about 535 feet and is worth seeing when the weather permits. It’s village looks like something out of a Norman Rockwell painting with its postcard perfect streets and shops along the way. The House of a Thousand Clocks resides in this area and truthfully, some of the most beautiful clocks I have ever seen are here. Not only is all the wood hand carved, the time piece of the clock is intricate and ingenious as well. There were so many to look at  we found we could have spent an entire day in this one shop alone!

fullsizeoutput_3b1fWe will stay in this area for a while and then head to Baden-Baden and visit the place where Tom’s family once lived. The weather is improving as the week goes by and while it will be hard to leave this area we are excited for what is ahead.

Always thinking of you in these beautiful places.
